“How much does a process server cost?” is the first question most clients ask — and the industry’s pricing is confusing enough that the question is justified. Here’s an honest breakdown of what you’ll pay in Toronto and the GTA.

The two pricing models

Flat rate. One price for the serve, regardless of how many kilometres the server drives within the zone. This is the model we use across the Metro GTA — the price you’re quoted is the price you pay.

Per-attempt or hourly. Some servers charge per attempt or per hour plus mileage. It can look cheaper until attempt three, the mileage bill, and the “file handling fee” arrive.

What’s typically included

A proper quote should include: at least two service attempts, the commissioned affidavit of service, and status updates. At GTA Process Server, our flat rate covers two varied attempts and the affidavit — no zone fees inside our core GTA area.

Common extras (legitimate ones)

  • Rush fees: Same-day service typically adds $20–$50; immediate (4-hour) rush more. (Ours: Same Day +$45, Next Day +$20, Immediate Rush +$90 — order and payment in before 1:00 PM ET for same-day.)
  • Mileage: many servers charge per kilometre outside their core zone. (Ours: no mileage charges inside the Metro GTA flat-rate zone — the quote is the total.)
  • Printing, commissioning, and exhibits: we handle printing, binding, commissioning, and exhibit preparation in-house — ask for a bundled quote alongside your serve.

Red flags

Quotes that won’t put the total in writing. “Administrative fees” that appear after the fact. Servers who can’t tell you what an affidavit of service includes. If the pricing needs a decoder ring, walk away.
